The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali is a beautifully written historical fiction novel about friendship, family, love, betrayal, and courage, set against the changing political landscape of Iran.

In 1950s Tehran, seven-year-old Ellie is forced to leave her privileged life after the death of her father. Lonely and struggling to adjust, she meets Homa, a brave and spirited girl who quickly becomes her closest friend.

The two girls grow up together, sharing dreams of becoming “lion women” — strong, courageous women who can shape their own futures. But as Ellie returns to a more privileged world, their lives begin to take different paths.

Years later, Homa unexpectedly re-enters Ellie’s life just as political turmoil in Iran reaches a breaking point. A devastating betrayal changes both women’s lives forever.

Spanning decades of friendship, political change, love, and loss, The Lion Women of Tehran is an emotional and thought-provoking read for fans of historical fiction, women’s fiction, literary fiction, and powerful stories about friendship.
